How to Pick the Perfect Gaming PC or Laptop
Whether you’re looking to build the perfect gaming PC or are looking to buy one, it can be difficult to know where to start. These tips will walk you through the process and help you decide which components are right for your budget and needs. Remember, your system will only be as good as its weakest link, so choose carefully! And while these tips focus on gaming PCs and laptops, they’re still useful if you’re building or buying an all-purpose computer system too.
How to pick a good gaming PC
Picking a good gaming computer can be tough. There are an immense number of options, from big-name manufacturers and companies like Alienware and Origin, to custom builders. With so many different options, it’s hard to tell which PC will work best for you. Luckily, I’ve done some of that research for you—and I have suggestions based on your preferred price range.
How to pick a good gaming laptop
Many manufacturers offer laptops with graphics cards specifically built for gaming, but those tend to be at a higher price point. For best bang for your buck, look for a high-end laptop and add your own graphics card later. The least expensive option is off-the-shelf laptops from companies like HP and Dell, which come bundled with integrated graphics chips—but also have free upgrade options that allow you add a dedicated card from Nvidia or AMD. Be careful not to get too caught up in hardcore specs when you’re choosing a new laptop, though; make sure it has enough memory and storage for your needs. Lastly, think about how much weight you’re willing to carry around all day—some people would rather trade portability for power in their machines.
How to pick a gaming CPU
Choosing a gaming CPU can be a little tricky if you’re not familiar with processor specifications. The first thing you need to decide is whether you want an Intel-based machine, an AMD-based machine, or both. It’s hard to pick between them right now because AMD has fallen behind in recent years, but it doesn’t matter if you go for Intel since pretty much all modern CPUs are made by Intel anyway. If your games are more CPU-intensive than GPU-intensive (e.g., strategy games) then go with whatever CPU is most popular in that genre and budget range; for everything else, pick whichever chip has higher clock speeds and/or better single-threaded performance—and make sure it supports fast RAM.
How to pick a gaming GPU
Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) are what make video games look good and perform well. But unlike CPUs, which are generally standardized across most brands and models, GPUs vary widely in how they’re made, what they can do, how much power they use and how much they cost. To figure out which GPU is right for you, start by narrowing down what it will be used for: 1080p gaming at 60fps on a 27 monitor? 1440p gaming at 60fps on a 24 monitor? 4K gaming? Workstation/3D modelling? VR experiences? If you don't know exactly what kind of performance you need from your graphics card yet, check out our tips below.
What to know before buying an SSD
If you’re looking for a speedy SSD, be aware that there are several factors beyond storage space. A given SSD’s performance depends on multiple variables—its storage size, interface type, and controllers, among other things. When shopping for an SSD, these are some of the most important considerations to take into account: Performance: You can check a manufacturer’s specifications to see an SSD’s sequential read/write speeds in megabytes per second (MBps). However, those numbers only tell part of a drive’s story. Seek times—how long it takes for a drive to locate data stored on it—and random access times also matter.
What things should you look out for?
It’s a fact: pc gaming is very popular. However, that doesn’t mean it’s easy to pick out a computer for playing video games. There are so many different components available that it can get overwhelming if you don’t know what you’re looking for. If you’re in search of an awesome desktop or laptop for gaming, there are certain features and characteristics you should consider before settling on one brand. The first thing most players think about when picking out a system is graphics card speed, but make sure your graphics card isn't outpacing your processor's ability!
